Already Bought Your Fan?

We'll install the fanyou already purchased

Bought your own fan and need it hung? That is a normal job for us. Here is what makes it go smoothly, and what to send us before we arrive.

Before We Arrive

Three things that make this a smooth job

Installing a fan you purchased is the same work as installing one we supply — we assemble it, mount it to the manufacturer's instructions, verify the support is adequate, and check that it runs without wobble or unusual noise. The difference is simply that we are working with a fan you chose.

Where it can go sideways is when the fan turns out not to suit the location, or arrives incomplete. Both are avoidable with a little information up front.

  • The model number, or a photo of the box. With this we can usually confirm the fan suits your location before we arrive.
  • Photo of the ceiling where it is going — showing the existing fixture if there is one, and enough around it to see the ceiling type.
  • Ceiling height at that location. This decides whether you need a flush mount or a downrod.

Check the box before we start. Fans occasionally arrive missing a part — a mounting screw, a blade screw, a remote receiver. If something is missing we will tell you rather than improvising, because working around a manufacturer's hardware is how fans end up mounted incorrectly.

Common Questions

Customer-supplied fan questions

Can you install a ceiling fan I already bought?

Yes. Customer-supplied fan installation is a regular part of what we do. The fan needs to be new, undamaged, and complete with its mounting hardware. If it arrives missing parts, we will tell you rather than improvising a mount.

What should I check before buying a fan?

The main things are the ceiling height at that location, whether the ceiling is flat or vaulted, and whether there is already a fan or a light fixture there. Ceiling height decides whether you want a flush mount or a downrod. Whether a fixture is already there affects the support question. If you tell us those three things before you buy, we can tell you what works.

What if my fan arrives and a part is missing?

We will tell you. Installing a fan with missing hardware means working around a manufacturer's design, and we are not willing to hang something that is not properly supported. The better path is usually to get the missing part from the retailer or manufacturer first, then reschedule the install.

Do you need the model number in advance?

It helps considerably. With a model number or a photo of the box, we can usually confirm that the fan suits your location before we arrive — checking things like whether it is rated for outdoor or damp use if it is going on a covered porch, and what mounting type it supports.

Is there anything you won't install?

Anything that cannot be safely mounted. That includes fans with missing hardware, fans that are not rated for the location they are going in, and locations where the ceiling box cannot be made suitable. We would rather tell you that up front than hang something we are not confident in.

Have your fan? Let's get it hung.

Send the model number and a photo of the ceiling. We will tell you what the installation involves and flag anything the fan needs before we arrive.
